Acne is a common skin condition which happens mostly during the teenage years. However, this affliction of the pores is by NO means restricted to teenagers. CORNEOCYTES are keratinocyte cells that have proliferated into the stratum corneum. The stratum corneum of healthy skin consists of 20-30 layers of corneocytes which extend down to the follicle wall in approximately 6-10 layers. Cells normally shed and get flushed away. Acne skin accumulates layer after layer of cells, forming several hundred cell-layers thick. In addition to the cell compaction millions of BACTERIUM get trapped in congested pores. Sebum feeds bacteria and the higher production of sebum, the more severe the case of acne.


When treating acne it is important to remember the three main components of the acne lesion in order to bring it under control:

1. Bacteria: Can be treated with Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Salicylic Acid, Benzoyl Peroxide, Sulfur, and Resorcinol
   
2. Sebum: Can be treated with Resorcinol, Salicylic Acid, Kaolin, Bentonite.
   
3. Corneocytes: Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Salicylic Acid, Enzymes, Benzoyl Peroxide, Resorcinol.
