QUESTION:
Look at Zone 1and 3. Is your skin congested? Is there a break out?

ANSWER:
Your shampoo is likely wrong for your skin type. It probably includes too much moisture. Make sure that you always rinse hair thoroughly at the hair line.

QUESTION:
Is it your skin dehydrated? Do you see horizontal lines?

ANSWER:
There are two ways to respond to this dilemma. First, you need to make sure that you properly remove makeup and cleansers. Secondly, there are very likely internal issues that cause this dehydration. Poor digestion and an obvious lack of water intake are major players. For those with a history of bladder problems skin dehydration is common.

QUESTION:
Look at Zone 2. Is it your skin congested? Do you see any redness, flakiness or vertical lines?

ANSWER:
Excess oil production and poor hygiene when removing eyebrow hair can cause these issues. It is imperative that you take care of your waxing or plucking in a clean area with sterile equipment. Wine, and a heavy intake of rich foods, possible lactose intolerance and late night eating can also be the cause.

QUESTIONS:
Look at Zones 4 and 10. Does your skin Does your skin appear to be congested or burned? Do you have comedones (black heads)?

ANSWER:
Your shampoo includes too much moisture and not thoroughly rinsed from hair line. Telephone or cellular head sets can also lead to comedones. Nickel or metal allergies have also been known to cause this condition. You may also want to focus on the intake of caffeine and salt. In addition, possible kidney stress and dehydration can present with these symptoms.

QUESTIONS:
Look at Zones 5 and 9. Is your skin sensitive to the environment? Do you see hot spots, broken capillaries, break outs, milia (white balls under the skin), vertical lines or hyperpigmentation?

ANSWER:
Allergies and sinus issues commonly affect this part of your skin. Comedogenic ingredients in makeup and improper telephone hygiene are also factors. Internally, lung stress from pollution, smoking or asthma, gum or other dental problems and long-term lung stress result in vertical lines.

QUESTIONS:
Look at Zones 6 and 8. Does your skin have milia, fine lines, dark circles, puffiness, sensitivity or irritation to the eyelids?

ANSWER:
Comedogenic ingredients in makeup and makeup removers, inherited allergies, poor lymph flow and insufficient sun protection cause these issues. Kidney stress, poor elimination, poor water intake and vitamin deficiencies are also potential factors.

QUESTIONS:
Look at Zone 7. Do you see congestion, comedones, broken capillaries, pigmentation on top lip or increased hair growth on the top lip?

ANSWER:
Your Mother warned you about this one! Touching your skin excessively is bad! Comedogenic ingredients in makeup, excess oil production, pigmentation and hair growth from oral contraceptives or smoking can also be factors. If you also have a red, slightly bulbous nose this may also be an indicator of high blood pressure. Hair or pigmentation on the top lip may also indicate a hormonal imbalance.

QUESTIONS:
Look at Zones 11 and 13. Does your skin have undersurface congestion, comedones, breakouts or cystic lesions?

ANSWER:
Improper removal of makeup or cleanser, ingredients in makeup and excessive touching in the area are very likely the causes. Hormonal increase, especially prior to menstruation, is a possible indication of over activity or imbalance.

QUESTIONS:
Look at Zone 12. Does your skin have undersurface congestion, breakout?

ANSWER:
An improper cleansing technique, comedogenic ingredients in makeup and, yes, leaning your head on your hands are all causes for this Zone 12 breakout. In addition, focus on improving your diet and look into possible food allergies, history of digestive problems if breakouts occur on center of chin.

QUESTIONS:
Look at Zone 14. Do you spot a breakout, pigmentation variations, signs of aging, and/or sensitivity/redness/allergies?

ANSWER:
Check your fragrance. You will also need to focus on sufficient sun protection, especially if you are going through menopause. Adrenal issues due to high stress can also affect this part of your skin.

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR ACNE!

Acne is a common skin condition which happens mostly during the teenage years. However, this affliction of the pores is by NO means restricted to teenagers. It has to be estimated that 40-50% of women in their 20s-40s suffer from low grade, persistent acne. Although genetics is the underlying cause of acne there are a variety of interrelated factors that are associated with the condition. Some of the factors include hormones, diet and stress but the THREE main components of the acne lesions are SEBUM, BACTERIA and CORNEOCYTES.

Hormone fluctuations in women are the most prevalent in the teen years. As a result sebaceous glands are enlarged and increased activity along with higher levels of the androgen hormones creates a greater production of sebum and more severe acne. CORNEOCYTES are keratinocyte cells that have proliferated into the stratum corneum. The stratum corneum of healthy skin consists of 20-30 layers of corneocytes which extend down to the follicle wall in approximately 6-10 layers. Cells normally shed and get flushed away. Acne skin accumulates layer after layer of cells, forming several hundred cell-layers thick. In addition to the cell compaction millions of BACTERIUM get trapped in congested pores. Sebum feeds bacteria and the higher production of sebum, the more severe the case of acne.

When treating acne it is important to remember the three main components of the acne lesion in order to bring it under control:

  1. Bacteria: Can be treated with Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Salicylic Acid, Benzoyl Peroxide, Sulfur, and Resorcinol
  2. Sebum: Can be treated with Resorcinol, Salicylic Acid, Kaolin, Bentonite.
  3. Corneocytes: Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Salicylic Acid, Enzymes, Benzoyl Peroxide, Resorcinol.

Treating Rosacea: Holiday Beauty Tips

Dilated capillaries are becoming more of a problem every day. As an esthetician I have been seeing what seems to be a growing number of people with extensive redness on their cheeks, nose and surrounding area and the chin. As soon as I spot it I know that my client has dilated capillaries which often come with rosacea.

What is rosacea and why do I have dilated capillaries?

This question I often hear from my customers. Rosacea is a common skin disorder. The medical term for the condition is Telangiectasia Rosacea. This condition generally affects the face (prime sites are around the mouth and nose). If you think you have rosacea, look for small-threadlike veins (dilated capillaries) close to surface of the skin, which when clustered together look like a red bruise. However, unlike normal bruises, the bruises presented by dilated capillaries don’t fade.

What caused rosacea and dilated capillaries?

Dilated capillaries are caused by climate, stimulants, inappropriate beauty products, red wine, spicy food, over exposure to the sun, extreme cold weather and wind, skin injury, washing face with hot water, smoking and good old genetics. There are the number of ways dilated capillaries can be treated. During the Holiday season and cold weather people who have this problem have to be more careful and follow esthetician advice:

  1. Cut back spicy food, red wine or alcohol
  2. If weather is cold and windy apply extra moisturizer with SPF
  3. Use appropriate skin care products, even when you travel throughout the holiday season

Tips from our esthetician: Rosacea sufferers, I highly recommend you use Dr Irina Eris skin care products. They are specially formulated to treat rosacea and dilated capillaries. Start by washing your face with Pharmaceris Cleansing Gel for dilated capillaries (do not forget to use room temperature water).Gently remove cleanser, pat your face dry and apply Pharmaceris Gentle Strengthening Toner. The next step is very important! Apply K-Derm Vitamin K 2% on the affected areas (wonderful product, very rare to find). Finish with Pharmaceris Eye Cream for dilated capillaries and Pharmaceris Intensive Nourishment Cream. If your skin is oily use Pharmaceris Multi-Smoothening Cream for oily skin SPF 15, or for dry skin use Pharmaceris Moisturizing and Strengthening Cream SPF 15. NOTE: You should regularly avoid intensive scrubbing of your face and do not use hot or cold water, only room temperature water.

Tips from our stylist: (For an oily scalp) Shampooing more frequently may be doing more good! An oily scalp may make dandruff worse, because the microorganisms often present on the scalp thrive on the natural oils found. For a dry scalp using all 3 products is important in controlling dandruff and keeping your scalp clean. Also, frequently washed hair always looks healthy. Blow drying is always a good trick for those with dandruff. Towel-dry hair and let it air dry until just damp before picking up the blow-dryer. You can use a blow dryer with a diffuser nozzle for the gentlest drying and avoid applying heat directly to the scalp.

Tips from our esthetician: Using appropriate cleansers is a very important step after you finish using anti-dandruff products. This time we recommended Germaine de Capuccini, the finest line from Spain. The Pure T Skin Line is an excellent choice for oily skin. Clean your face with Pure T Skin Purifying Cleansing Foam, follow with Option Line Oily Skin lotion and finish with Pure T Skin Balancing gel. Don’t forget to use Pure T Skin T Mat express under makeup to avoid shine. For normal/dry skin: Start by washing your face with Option Line Comfort Cleansing Milk, follow with Option Line Total Comfort Lotion and finish with Strategist Day Cream (my favorite).

Olive Oil Benefits for your Hair

We are back to tapping Mother Nature’s many great resources! One of the best resources everyone should know about: the amazing benefits of olive oil. Keep olive oil handy for healing your body from head to toe!

Internally, olive oil helps to stimulate metabolism, lower cholesterol, promote digestion and lubricate mucous membranes. The Vitamin E in olive oil is an antioxidant and less likely to produce free radicals, which damage cell membranes. The therapeutic effect of olive oil on skin and hair is also amazing. Its nutritive effect helps to prevent hair loss, moisturize skin, relieve scalp itching.

I’ve spent decades touting the use of olive oil with my friends and spa clients. When
CHI Organics (hair line) began a new line called Olive Nutrient Therapy, I was thrilled. They combine Ancient Organic Benefits with Advanced American Technology.
